Here are some of our most frequently asked questions.
Oil provides essential protection for your car: lubricants ensure better engine performance and prevent wear and oxidation.
Better engine performance and protection against wear and corrosion. They reduce the risk of breakdown and prolong your engine's life.
Our professional mechanics will advise you in choosing the best lubricant for your car. Their recommendation is based on a range of criteria, including the car manufacturer's recommendations and your car's age, motorization, engine power, mileage and conditions of use.
From rallys to daily use, TOTAL develops lubricants that are adapted to the most demanding uses and designed for the most efficient engine technologies. Our lubricants meet international standards and are approved by leading car manufacturers. In addition, TOTAL has developed lubricants that reduce environmental impact and fuel consumption.
Lubricants behave differently at high and low temperatures. One way to assess oil is by its viscosity. Viscosity varies according to temperature in the following manner: the higher the temperature, the more fluid the oil and the lower its viscosity.
This means is that if the engine is to perform at its best, the oil must be able to retain its viscosity whatever the heat conditions: it must stay fluid at cold temperatures (to allow the engine to start) and it must be viscous at hot temperatures (to stop the various moving parts from coming into contact with each other). It's easy to learn to read the standard notation for viscosity on our product labels, always noted by two numbers + one letter, for example: 10W 40
- The letter W stands for "winter".
- The first number (10) represents the lowest temperature (°C) at which the oil retains fluidity. The lower the number, the more the oil retains its fluidity in cold weather, ensuring a good distribution in the engine even at very low temperatures.
- The second number (40) is for high temperatures: the higher it is, the more viscous the lubricant will be when it's hot, so lubrication is maintained at high temperature.
